Will sick pseudo- secularists stop running down religion? – M.V. Kamath

If India has not often got what it deserved by way of recognition, it is because of our sick pseudo- secularists who revel in running down their own religion, not to speak of their own country. The more they run down their country and their ancient culture, the more they feel self- fulfilled.
What sort of people are Hindus? What sort of people have they been down the centuries as barbarians from Central Asia and elsewhere mounted assault after assault on their coveted land? Servile, according to some foreign observers.
In his book The Crimson Throne, Sudhir Kakar refers to a diary maintained by an Italian traveller who came to India in the 17th Century to Goa to find most of the Hindus “ utterly cowed down” by the Portuguese who looked down on them “ with disdain” and denied them the right even to wear shoes! The Italian Niccoleo Menucci, like another traveller, a Frenchman, Francois Bernier, journeyed to Delhi where they lived under the Mughal Court and watched how Hindus were treated. Abominably, it turned out. Bernier has given instance after instance of how Hindus were insulted by the Muslims under Mughal rule, and at one point he writes: “ There are five or six idolaters for every Mohammadan.
It is astonishing to see how this enormous multitude has allowed itself to be subjected by so small a number of Mohammadan princes”. According to Bernier, “ the mohammadans rightly despise the idolaters as a naive and primitive people”. There is more such stuff in the book. Then read Meenakshi Jain’s Parallel Pathways: Essays on Hindu- Muslim Relations ( 1707- 1857). In the course of his third attack in 1757 Ahmed Shah Abdali destroyed the holy city of Mathura.
The Jesuit Tieffenthaler described the event. “ They burnt the houses together with the inmates, slaughtering others with the sword and the lance, hauling off into captivity maiden and youths. In the temples they slaughtered cows and smeared the images and pavements with blood”. How many Hindu kings, one may ask, have invaded Afghanistan or Central Asia to destroy mosques and rape Muslims women? Forget the role of Aurangzeb.
A more despicable character has never ruled India. In South India, one had to reckon with Tipu Sultan and what he did to Hindus has to be read to be believed.
Just to celebrate the marriage of his son, according to a British historian James Bristow, in “ a piece of contemptible, fanatical and tyrannical despotism, he compelled 1,00,000 of his defenseless Hindu subjects to embrace Mahamotism on the same day”. Even Christians were not spared of his intolerance which led to the extermination of a total of 40,000 souls. Scores and scores of temples were destroyed or desecrated during Islamic rule in India.
Why should these events be recalled? Why can’t we let bygones be bygones? The answer is simple: One gets disgusted with the way our pseudosecularists has been running down Hindus and giving them a sense of guilt. A time has come to call there wretches to order.
Hindus and pardon the generalization – have invariably been at the other end of the stick. Our history books are bland. Our textbook writers conveniently omit Islamic misdeeds lest they are dammed as communalists. Our psedo- secularists won’t even accept the ` fact’ that the Babri Masjid was built on the very site where a huge structure dedicated to Sri Ram existed and which has destroyed.
Hindus may have a million faults, but no Hindu ruler has gone to Portugal or Spain, destroyed Churches and converted Christians into Hinduism on pain of death. We have a pretty clean record. Our pseudo- secularists want deliberately destroy the selfrespect of Hindus by constantly condemning them as communalists, when they would rather forget all the suffering they have undergone in the past under alien rulers. Believe it, they would rather forget the humiliation that they have suffered in the past and move on, but our pseudo secularists are making it difficult for them. Just for asking that one place the Ram Janmabhoomi be cleared of an illegally constructed Masjid, Hindus are damned to eternity.
Faith is questioned. Let them question the faith of Muslims and Christians and they will know what they will get back in return.
India, it is said, is on its way to be a Great Power. There is no such thing as India is ‘ on its way’. India, even under centuries of tyrannous rule has always been great because India is more than a state: It is a civilization, which has helped it to maintain its place under the most trying circumstances.

True, so much needs to be done, but Rome, its is said, was not built in a day. But our Army engineers set right a broken bridge in Delhi associated with the Commonwealth Games in just four days.
es, there is poverty in the land and don’t our home- grown enemies make so much of it? but at the national level we are a thriving nation. es, in tribal areas, much injustice has been done but there is a growing awareness of it among the people at large and a desire to make amends. That is the first step towards achieving our goal of equality among all Indians.
We don’t have to aspire for greatness. Let us aspire for goodness and leave greatness to China which is proving itself to be a worse imperialist country than Britain was in its heyday. China is today’s imperial power and Pakistan is the running dog of Chinese imperialism.
We Indians aspire for nobody’s land and only want to be left alone.
es, there is corruption in the land but we admit to it and seek to rectify it. India lives under many layers of civilization and culture and that is as much its strength as it is its weakness.
But which country in the world can put up a show such as we did at the inauguration of Commonwealth Games? We don’t have to be apologetic to anyone for anything.
We will overcome our shortcomings as we have done so often in the past to become, not necessarily a Great Nation, but a Good people with an open heart, ready to forget a painful past, ready to work with all people irrespective of their religion, to build an India of our dreams.
That is Hindutwavad, if our pseudo- secularists want to know.
It is said, but if there are just tow idiots in Bollywood films there are two thousand of that variety in our pseudo- secular society. We can build an even greater India if only our pseudo- secularists do not constantly pull us down by our legs.
They need to be called to order and the sooner, the better.

How Allahabad HC exposed ‘experts’ espousing Masjid cause

NEW DELHI: The role played by “independent experts” — historians and archaeologists who appeared on behalf of the Waqf Board to support its claim — has come in for criticism by one of the Allahabad High Court judges in the Ayodhya verdict.

While the special bench of three judges unanimously dismissed objections raised by the experts to the presence of a temple, it was Justice Sudhir Agarwal who put their claims to extended judicial scrutiny.

Most of these experts deposed twice. Before the ASI excavations, they said there was no temple beneath the mosque and, after the site had been dug up, they claimed what was unearthed was a mosque or a stupa. During lengthy cross-examination spread over several pages and recorded by Justice Agarwal, the historians and experts were subjected to pointed queries about their expertise, background and basis for their opinions.

To the court’s astonishment, some who had written signed articles and issued pamphlets, found themselves withering under scrutiny and the judge said they were displaying an “ostrich-like attitude” to facts.

He also pointed out how the independent witnesses were all connected — one had done a PhD under the other, another had contributed an article to a book penned by a witness.

Some instances underlined by the judge are: Suvira Jaiswal deposed “whatever knowledge I gained with respect
to disputed site is based on newspaper reports or what others told” (other experts). She said she prepared a report on the Babri dispute “after reading newspaper reports and on basis of discussions with medieval history expert in my department.” Supriya Verma, another expert who challenged the ASI excavations, had not
read the ground penetration radar survey report that led the court to order an excavation. She did her PhD under another expert Shireen F Ratnagar.

Verma and Jaya Menon alleged that pillar bases at the excavated site had been planted but HC found they were not present at the time the actual excavation took place.

Archaeologist Shereen F Ratnagar has written the “introduction” to the book of another expert who deposed, Professor Mandal. She admitted she had no field experience.

“Normally, courts do not make adverse comments on the deposition of a witness and suffice it to consider whether it is credible or not, but we find it difficult to resist ourselves in this particular case considering the sensitivity and nature of dispute and also the reckless and irresponsible kind of statements…” the judge has noted.

He said opinions had been offered without making a proper investigation, research or study in the subject. The judge said he was “startled and puzzled” by contradictory statements. When expert witness Suraj Bhan deposed on the Babri mosque, the weight of his evidence was contradicted by anotherexpert for Muslim parties, Shirin Musavi, who told the court that Bhan “is an archaeologist and not an expert on medieval history”.

Justice Agarwal referred to signed statements issued by experts and noted that “instead of helping in making a cordial atmosphere it tends to create more complications, conflict and controversy.” He pointed out that experts carry weight with public opinion. “One cannot say that though I had made a statement but I am not responsible for its authenticity since it is not based on my study or research but what I have learnt from what others have uttered,” Justice Aggarwal has said, emphasising the need for thorough original research before concurring with what someone else has claimed.

MUMBAI: A day after the Allahabad high court verdict on the Ayodhya title suit, a section of Muslims have started looking at the option of taking their mosque away from the Ram Janmabhoomi site. Some prominent clerics, peace activists and Islamic scholars feel that by not appealing in the Supreme Court and paving the way for Ram temple in Ayodhya, Muslims will earn a great deal of Hindu and secular Indians’ goodwill. Significantly, the option is not un-Islamic.

“The Sunni Waqf Board and All India Muslim Personal Law Board should show a gesture and vacate the land the court has allotted them. It should not be seen as surrender,” said Islamic scholar Zeenat Shaukat Ali. Ali added that there are precedents in Muslim history where Muslims had showed generosity and given up their places of worship once they found that these were built on places of worship of other religions.

She further said, “In the 8th century, the Ummayid caliph Ummavi Waleed surrendered the land of a mosque to Christians which his predecessors had grabbed. In Ayodhya, even if Muslims believe, and even if the court has vindicated their stand that the Babri mosque was not built on razed temple, they should be practical and build a mosque away from the temple site.”

The fear of Muslims is that once they give up their claim on the Ayodhya land, Hindutva organisations might raise the issues of Mathura and Kashi. Leading Islamic scholar Maulana Wahiduddin Khan said this fear was removed once the Places of Worship Act 1993 was brought which says that the status quo of all the place of worship, except Ram Janmabhoomi- Babri Masjid, will be maintained as on August 15, 1947. Moreover, the Maulana maintained, several mosques have been relocated in countries like Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

“It’s not in Quran and Hadith that once there’s a mosque, it’s always a mosque. It was later made part of Muslim belief by some fuqhas (Islamic jurists). Nobody is saying that Muslims should give up their claim on the mosque. They can relocate it,” said Khan.

Javed Anand of Muslims for Secular Democracy (MSD) argued that even if the SC endorsed the HC verdict and Muslims got their share in the disputed land, it was almost impossible that Muslims would ever be able to rebuild a mosque on the same site. “The best option is that they gift the land to the Hindus and set an example of magnanimity. It will open a new chapter of Hindu-Muslim unity,” said Anand.

Echoing this, Dongri-based businessman and president of Ekta Welfare Association Iqbal Memon Officer said a petition in the Supreme Court would only keep the issue boiling.

Ayodhya verdict – civic guidelines

The Union home ministry of Indian Government has sent an advisory to all the states asking them to give topmost priority to maintaining law and order in view of the September 24 verdict of Allahabad high court. The central government has also asked TV channels not to air provocative news that might flare communal disturbances. On that day, the court is set to give verdict on the Ayodhya case. While governments are busy in taking precautionary measures, what is the role of an ordinary citizen / civic groups?

Guidelines for individual citizens

1. Be aware that Government is taking all precautions with respect to security of citizens.

2. But you should also know that despite government’s efforts, there could be trouble in your area.

3. Trouble, in case of any, will be created either by the supporters of aggrieved parties, or some other miscreants with political, sectarian interests.

4. It could be stone throwing, beating, destroying properties, abusing or some other way of physically / mentally harming the innocent people.

5. The incidents could be considered as small, very small or very small – but still it could create sufficient pain and anguish to those who are affected.

6. It may not be possible to get case registered in many of these cases. In most of these cases, it may not be possible to get justice. Sometimes the affected people will not even get the sympathy of the officials, police, elected representatives etc

7. Being cautions and avoiding getting hurt in about such incidents is the ONLY solution.

8. Consider the following points while you take the precautions
(a) Talk with your family members about the precautions to be taken.
(b) Talk to your neighbors – exchange telephone / mobile numbers
(c) Be prepared to take up additional steps along with neighbors in an emergency situation.
(d) Discuss with office bearers of residential association of your area. Ask them to be in touch with police, elective representatives and others.
(e) Offer your services to the residential association – think about night shifts, forming bigger groups etc
(f) Trust the government – Help the government and at the same time, prepare yourself to face any unfavorable situation.
(g) Report any provocative, intolerant incidents of your area to your neighbors, residential association and if required to police and elected representatives.
(h) Share your concerns with police and elected representatives – seek their help and advice.

Guidelines for Civic Groups (office bearers of residential associations)

1. Get in touch with police and elected representatives and ensure that precautions are taken about safety of residents of your area.

2. Ensure and plan for receiving quick help form the authorities.

3. Give tips to youth of your area to come for help in case of emergency – to help the protection of the rest of the people before the real help arrives.

4. Don’t panic residents – but make them aware of the forthcoming situation.

5. Propagate trust worthiness of the government – take responsibility of safety of residents of your association.

Liberhan report has not changed the real issue of Ramjanmabhoomi

Ayodhya belongs to us all, like Sri Ram. Liberhan Commission report hasn’t made even an iota of a difference having made the nation wait for seventeen years. The only course left for the government now is to approach the Guinness Book of World Records to get an award for the longest procrastination to the commission and carry on with the national business. If the Congress, in its zeal to encash on its value for Muslim appeasement, wants to create a scene after it, it will be in for a shock. Ayodhya is a difficult issue for it—its hands are everywhere from opening the locks to laying the foundation stone and later the Rao era.

The fact is no power can now shift the temple built on Ramjanmabhoomi. Daily puja is going on uninterruptedly, notwithstanding a terrorist attack on it. The charge sheets and the case have lost their relevance. Those who took up the cause politically are a divided house, some converting to neo-‘secularism’ have lost all credibility in public eyes. Even if the temple was a long-distance call, they could have at least taken care of the Ayodhya city, its protectors and the carriers of an invaluable flow of traditions—the sadhus and mathadhipatis. They didn’t do anything.

Take care of Ayodhya
Ayodhya is a city of Sri Ram and India would be less than a nation if Sri Ram is taken away or left isolated like a post-Columbus American-Indian village.

Turn Ayodhya into an international city of grandeur like Thailand has done to its own Ayutthaya. It’s a city defining India, the heritage, the immortal literature woven around it, the dreams and aspirations of people sung keeping it in the centre, the river Sarayu and the dust turned holier because Sri Ram had played in it. It’s incredibly Indian and unbelievably divine. It will earn spiritual solace. Those who think in terms of euros and dollars, they too won’t be disappointed. That would also come with a political mileage for all times without ruffling any feathers or denting a vote bank.

After all, Rajiv Gandhi had started his election campaign from here promising Ramrajya. For a devout Sikh like Dr Manmohan Singh, the Guru Granth Saheb has the most adorable references to Sri Ram. And for others, Sri Ram is India, which has given them so much of respect and power without bothering about their religion or origin. Mohammad Iqbal, the famous poet, had said: Ram is Imam-e-Hind—the greatest icon of India. They all owe to a great extent to repay a debt to this land’s civilisational power, which has been soothing and compassionate to all coming from diverse backgrounds and having different ideas.

Don’t deny Ayodhya this time

Die unsung but be honest once to your conscience.
Ayodhya has been ditched immeasurably by her own small-time courtiers.

Ayodhya deserves to be developed as an international city of Sri Ram, the King of Ayodhya, who fought the devils and gave us reasons to celebrate Deepawali, now the global festival of lights. And his return to Ayodhya makes us enact Ramlilas and burn effigies of an unrepentant wicked. That’s why we have a Vijayadashami, the Dussehra. Ayodhya is unquestioningly intertwined into the lives of billions of Hindus who would prefer a Ram Ram or Jai Siyaram as a salutation to a namaste. The joy and sorrows of Sita—Janaki—the van-gaman, exile to the forest, the Luv and Kush episode, and the ultimate jal-samadhi, self-immersion by Sri Ram in the Sarayu—this all is Ayodhya. Later, Luv established Lahore and even Pakistan government feels proud of this fact in its travel literature and Kush established Bedi clan, to which belonged Guru Govind Singh Saheb as per his bani, the holy words.

That’s us put together. That’s Ayodhya’s legacy
Make Ayodhya a union territory. A city extraordinaire must be maintained under extraordinary dispensation—the central government. Let NRIs design and fund it. Reward the pujaris and sadhus who have been keeping the flame of dharma and city’s sanctity alive, living in penury, ignored and isolated. They deserve warmth of belongingness and we owe it to them. The bungalow-owners of metros and those who raise decibels in the Parliament for nothing never help in protecting the heritage. Those who do it must be recognised. Ayodhya is more than Angkor wat because from Korean princes to the builders of Angkor wat, they all took inspiration from this city on the banks of the Sarayu. It’s not just a parliamentary or assembly seat.

An international Sri Ram university, a Janaki international airport, a Shabari university for women, a Hanuman academy for warfare, a Valmiki think tank to study invasions on India and the resultant socio-political changes, a Luv-Kush panoramic garden of Indian culture and history on the Sarayu’s banks, with a Pakistani contribution too— the city must resonate with elements that define and sustain Bharat that is India.

Think about it. Liberhan reminds you of smallness. Ayodhya is universal.
